These numbers are a little scary. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Bay Area added 16,600 unemployed people between May and June. Though the raw numbers of unemployed workers were lower in June than a year ago, the number of people out of work grew by 16,600.
Unemployed workers rose from 9.3% of the work force in May to 10 percent in June. Unemployment also rose in Silicon Valley, which added 6,200 unemployed workers between May and June. The unemployment rate in this area was 10.5 % in June.
